Belk, a Century of Retail Leadership
Published in Hardcover by Univ of North Carolina Pr (December, 1988)
Author: Howard E., Jr. Covington
Average review score:

An excellent history of a department store chain
The family-owned Belk department store chain, based in Charlotte, North Carolina, is chronicled in this well-written book by Howard Covington. The book contains a wealth of historical information on the Belk chain and some excellent photographs as well, though there are no color photos. It's an interesting and easy read that will please the history buff, the retail fanatic, or the casual reader in most, if not all. This book is out of print but highly reccomended.

The Best for Less
Published in Paperback by Fireside (April, 1991)
Author: Lydia Cherniakova
Average review score:

A great reference book for NYC bargain shoppers
This book has been my bible for the last six years. Every bargain shopper should have a copy. Although it is slightly out of date, this book tells the consumer where to get goods and services for less in New York. The author has personally visited every store and gives the reader the inside scoop on what to expect. Some stores even give additional discounts if you bring in a copy of "The Best For Less". I am disappointed that this great resource is not readily available, because it is the best book of it's kind

Beyond the Pass: Economy, Ethnicity, and Empire in Qing Central Asia, 1759-1864
Published in Hardcover by Stanford Univ Pr (June, 1998)
Author: James A. Millward
Average review score:

Superbly written scholarly study of Qing dynasty Xinjiang
James A. Millward's study of the Qing dynasty's governance of Xinjiang is possibly the most careful study of the subject written since Owen Lattimore's studies of Central Asia. Taking on the Fairbankian idea of concentric rings of Chinese empire, Millward reminds us that the ways in which the Qing dynasty governed its far western regions was a Manchu policy, with distinct characteristics. The treatment is topical, but does not lose sight of the chronological narrative. The study ends, however, before the Muslim rebellions in the region changed it forever, both in its ethnicity and demographics. Most enjoyably, Millward writes engaging prose, and has produced a scholarly work that is also a good read.

The Big Emerging Markets: 1996 Outlook and Sourcebook
Published in Paperback by Bernan Assoc (September, 1995)
Authors: International Trade Administration, Bernan Press, and Department of Commerce
Average review score:

An excellent, one-stop compendium for international traders.
The only book I've seen to present the "bottom-line" on doing business in the important emerging markets of Asia, Eastern Europe, Africa, and Latin America. Despite the Asian Financial Crisis and other factors affecting U.S. trade with some of these markets, all are expected to recover in the near future and to remain robust for the long term. This book's observations will carry on for many years and its reference compendium at the back is still unsurpassed. Highly recommended for classes teaching international trade and finance. Excellent layout, organization, and graphic design make this a pleasant volume to read, and we look forward to a new edition soon.

BizTalk(TM) Server: The Complete Reference
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Osborne Media (13 November, 2001)
Authors: David Lowe, Xin Chen, Todd Mondor, Tomislav Rus, Ned Rynearson, Steve Wright, and Tom Xu
Average review score:

Comprehensive, timely, and easy to read
Great book. Not only covers the meat of BTS 2000, but also the changes contained in BTS 2002, and, how the BizTalk Accelerators work. It's not only remarkably comprehensive (and thus really thick), but also a pretty easy read. Solid examples and good use of screen shots. Covers some of the deeper configurations that weren't fully flushed out in previous BizTalk books. An absolute must-have for a BTS Admin, or, someone who wants a deep understanding of what BTS can do.

Black Enterprise Guide to Technology for Entrepreneurs
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (05 April, 2002)
Author: Bernadette Williams
Average review score:

Delivers On Its Title
I found this book particularly well done and interesting in two aspects. First, I was impressed that this was truly a book for the African American and for the "Black Enterprise" population internationally. So much research is incorporated, without making it hard to read. I felt I had a much better understanding of the needs as well as the contributions of that population after reading the book.

Secondly, this was a great practical book on technology and how to use it to further a business. I am not a tech person, but I had no trouble understanding any of it, and I learned a lot I didn't know about how to use technology in ways that will enhance the profit potential of my business. I particularly liked the chapter on Improving Your Company's Internet ROI which covers planning for your site step-by-step.

There are also over 20 pages of web sites of interest to African American entrepreneurs, and the numerous appendices including a tremendous glossary are worth the price of the book alone.
